And they're over it...

May 21, 2009
I wasn't exaggerating when I said before that it was nearly impossible to get a picture of these two both looking at the camera and with a smile on their faces...it took exactly 36 tries this morning to get this picture! Below is evidence of how hard it can be to capture them both...
Cousar not looking and Barrett's shoe in the way... Cousar still not looking (because he knows I want him to) and Barrett apparently day dreaming... Monica Enlow did the appliques on the shirts...I thought they turned out precious! I just wish I knew how to do them...one of these days...probably when they are too old to wear them... Finally, Cousar is looking!!! Wait...Barrett is still in his own world...
Barrett FINALLY sees the camera...
And they're over it...photo session done...

Crabby

Crabby (and he was...)
May 18, 2009
When I picked the boys up from school on Friday, Barrett had a rash around his neck and on his cheeks. Because he has had sensitive skin in the past I thought maybe he had an allergic reaction to his sunscreen or a heat rash. Then in the middle of the night Friday he woke up with a temperature of 103. We sat up with him for a little bit and gave him some motrin...the fever broke by morning. His temp continued to stay low until nap time Saturday...and that's when the screaming began (Barrett screaming, that is...). He and I loaded up and headed to Urgent Care and left Justin and Cousar at home to get a nap (which never happened). The doctor tested him for strep...it came back negative...so Barrett was diagnosed with a fever virus...I have come to the conclusion that a fever virus is the diagnosis they give when they can't find anything else wrong...B continued to run a fever on Sunday... So today we had a sick day at home...we even let Cousar join us...
We spent most of the afternoon outside playing in the frog pool that Aunt Joyce gave the boys last summer! They both love it!

Raining AGAIN...

This morning we had nowhere to be...our first free Saturday morning in several weeks! It was raining AGAIN...so I needed something creative to do with the boys inside...and play dough came to mind...playing with play dough was a first for both boys (at least at our house) and I am happy to report that every bit of it stayed in the kitchen! Cousar went to work right away...using the cookie cutters, cutting "pizza" with the knife" (don't worry, grandparents! It is plastic and dull! ), and rolling the play dough to make balls...

Barrett observing Cousar closely! He usually does this when they play together...takes in everything Cousar does, and then immediately copies him! He did eat just a tiny bit of play dough when I had my back turned! (The green slobber and funny face gave him away!) I think it was enough to keep him from ever doing it again! (One great thing about a pacifier - it tends to keep B from putting foreign objects in his mouth!)
Cousar making a snake...or rather, taking Mommy's snake apart...and, yes, that is a big tub of green play dough! It was originally for the kids to play with at Barrett's green themed birthday party, but I forgot to put it out!
All of the snake making and cutting with knives freed me up to work on my couponing! I am soooooo behind!
Our next activity was a bath (which is why Cousar was topless in the picture below), and then
Sweets called... "Hello...Sweets, Sweets. Hello...Where are you, Sweets?"
"You won't be back until, when?"
"Sweets, let's say our months together...May, June, July, August, September, October...I'll be driving by then!!!"
"Oh, thank goodness. You'll be back to see me before then! I need someone to get control of Mommy, Daddy, and Barrett!"
Next up was lunch...even though it felt like we had just finished breakfast...
Cousar no longer wants to sit in his high chair for meals...he wants to sit in a "big" chair like Mommy and Daddy...if only we could figure out how to get him to stay in it for the entire meal!
And Barrett no longer wants us to feed him with the spoon. He wants to do it himself...you can well imagine the number of outift changes in our day now...

"I want to go to the beach..."

Today I bought the boys a beach ball (one each, of course) from the Dollar Tree (my favorite store)! As soon as I told Cousar what it was he started saying, "I want to go to the beach." I almost couldn't get him out of his carseat when we got home because he kept insisting that he wanted to go to the beach!!!

Getting ready to throw the ball in the air...

Barrett loves his beach ball, too...

The Burgess Garden...

This year is the second year Justin has planted a garden. Last year was a pretty good dress rehearsal...I think this year's garden is going to be much more successful!

The boys have helped a lot in the garden...from planting seeds, to digging holes, to watering the garden...
Barrett performing an inspection...
Justin may have to correct me on these...I think the plant above is a tomato plant.
Some sort of beans...
My zinnias are coming up! They should bloom soon...
Corn...

Mommy's Wii???

Justin and the boys gave me a Wii and Wii Fit (and a very sweet card) for Mother's Day! I was so surprised and so excited. Needless to say, I wasn't able to get much playing time in. Cousar thinks that it is his Wii...and believe it or not, he is great at boxing!

Starting to get the hang of it... Hitting them with a right jab...if only we could get him to transfer these skills to the playground! I bet we wouldn't get any more accident (aka "a friend bit Cousar") reports from school!
In every round he played he knocked out his opponent...I couldn't even accomplish the same fete in the first round!
Starting to get a little tired...
KO - Knockout!!!
Barrett caught on quickly as well! As soon as Cousar dropped the controllers, Barrett started mimicking his moves!
He wants to be as big as Cousar!!! He will try anything he sees him do!

Choo Choo

May 10, 2009
Cousar has started playing pretend a lot lately. He will put his cape on me or Justin and pretend to cut our hair. He has pretend phone conversations...and the picture above shows him playing choo choo train. He lines up his and Barrett's chairs and starts making train noises...

Muffins with Mom

Muffins with Mom
First Baptist Church Weekday Education
May 8, 2009
I am so blessed to have three wonderful males in my life...the two above (who never seem to look at the camera at the same time...EVER!) and my wonderful husband. There were several years of our lives that we thought it would be just the two of us...and now our cup overflows...I'm always mindful of women suffering from infertility around Mother's Day. I remember how hard that day used to be for me...not only because I wasn't a mother but also because I had lost my mother...it all seemed so unfair. My friend and sorority sister, Betsy Veach Swenson, wrote this article in Mother's Day 2007 for a newspaper she worked for the time...she couldn't have said it any better...
******************************* My Mother's Day was lovely. I was greeted with breakfast in bed by an adorable husband and an even more adorable (if that's possible), curly-haired baby. We went to church, where I received a carnation and stood with all of the other mothers to a round of applause. The rest of the day was spent lounging on the couch, reading magazines and resting while my husband tended to the baby, folded laundry, prepped meals and cleaned the kitchen. Lovely. It wasn't long ago, though, that Mother's Day was hard. Painful, even. I remember, just three years ago, sitting in the congregation at church while all of the mothers around me were asked to stand for a moment of recognition. I clapped along with everyone else, because that's what you're supposed to do. And I blinked back tears because I could not join them. After two years of "trying" and four miscarriages along the way, I wasn't sure if I ever would. But this year I did--join them, I mean. And I found myself shifting my weight uncomfortably when asked to stand. My eyes darted around the sanctuary, and I realized I was looking for her--for the woman like me, three years ago. I know she was there--somebody like her was there. I find myself uncomfortable with being honored on Mother's Day, as if I'm being celebrated for my good luck. It's a hard job sometimes, parenting my son, but it is a job I am fortunate to have been given. I am honored to mother him; I am humbled to nurture such a precious life and watch it grow. This Mother's Day, more than anything, I felt grateful for this gift of motherhood--a gift I do not deserve, one I did not earn, and yet it is mine. For now, it is mine. How I wish motherhood were available to everyone who wanted it. But it doesn't work that way. Motherhood doesn't always come to those who are deserving, to those who long for a child. Why it falls into the laps of some women and remains elusive for others, I will never understand. But I do understand the yearning. I understand the sadness. And last week, I thought of those women who were hurting on Mother's Day, for those women who are still waiting for the moment when they will be called "Mom." That was me, not so very long ago, and I remember.

Birthday Party Season

This morning me, Justin, and the boys went to Kennedy's 1st birthday party. Kennedy is 3 weeks younger than Barrett, and her mom used Dr. Williams as well! When we woke up it was pouring rain outside, and within just a few minutes the electricity was out! I felt awful for Allison (Kennedy's mom); however, I later accused her of having a hotline to Heaven because the electricity came back on and the sun came out about half an hour before the party started! Kennedy and Barrett played in the drink buckets for at least 20 minutes. I wish I had known before how entertaining ice can be for a one year old! Grandma and Big Pop gave him the precious whale jon-jon! It is adorable on him! Thank y'all!

Cousar eating his hamburger...Kennedy's daddy works for the athletic department at Ole Miss. The football recruiting coordinator was at the party with his wife and children. When Cousar started eating his burger, the coach offered to start recruiting Cousar to play football now. He was very impressed with a 2 year old who would eat a hamburger like a grown man! (And, yes, I am bragging...)
The birthday girl...Happy Birthday, Kennedy!

Waiting on the elevator...

Every morning it's the same routine...unload the boys from their carseats....Cousar runs in and presses the elevator button with me and Barrett following behind...reach the 1st floor...Cousar decides if we will go down the right or left stairwell...drop Barrett off in his room and then finally drop Cousar off in his room. This week our mornings have been a little different. Barrett has decided he wants to walk with big brother as well...

Waiting on the elevator
May 8, 2009 I didn't realize that Cousar was doing an elevator dance until I went back and looked at the pictures. It continued all the way to the first floor...
More dancing...
Still dancing...(and apparently singing too...)

McDonald's BBQ Sauce

Barrett discovered McDonald's BBQ sauce while I wasn't paying attention tonight...And, yes, it is all over that precious outfit (and his face and in his hair)...and yes I am letting him walk around while he eats instead of sitting in his high chair...and, yes, it was everywhere by the time I got it way from him...and finally...yes, I did take pictures of it before I cleaned him up!!

May 5, 2009 Eating it straight off his fingers...
Could he be any happier about BBQ sauce?

Don't let his sweet face fool you...

Cousar
April 9, 2009
Don't let his sweet face fool you...Cousar can be quite the manipulator! (He is a cute one though!) Tonight at dinner he wanted more dip (sweet and sour sauce) for his chicken. He had more than enough on his plate. Justin told him he could have more when he finished what was already there. Well this sent Cousar into one of his tantrums. Justin took him to his room to cool off. Within a minute he was back at the table without any tears or 2 year old attitude! As soon as Justin put him back in his chair, Cousar looked over at me and mouthed the words "more dip." He didn't say them out loud...just mouthed them! Yes, that's right...my sweet Cousar tried to get me to give him more dip without Justin noticing. His eyes were saying "come on, mom...it'll be our secret..." Well, of course, I fell out laughing as did Justin. And then Cousar followed suit! How do they learn the art of manipulation at such a young age?
